Documentary and explanation

This groundbreaking documentary aims to tell the story of Leicester’s Chinese community through the experiences of some of its most prominent figures. It tells the story of the community and their impact on the city’s society and economy from the 1940s to the present day.

Researching this project was no easy task; with few official documents, the most valuable and interesting contributions came from the first-hand experiences of the people we interviewed. Their accounts tell the fascinating story of the contexts that led them to emigrate from China to Britain, and the lives they built for themselves and their families once they arrived.

Many thanks to all who shared their stories and experiences to the documentary, in particular the Chinese Elder’s Club, and the De Montfort University Confucius Institute for all their help, and to the team at Colab Creation for putting the film together.
